Cybersecurity Essentials Training


With the support of the Government of Quebec, and in partnership with other education institutions across the province, the Terranova platform was selected as McGill's cybersecurity training provider.​  

McGill faculty, staff, researchers, and students have access to free online cybersecurity awareness training through this platform. 

**As new courses are made available through this online training platform, they will be listed below, unless they’re specific to a department, faculty, or role.**

You can log in any time to the platform to see what courses are available to you. If you want to refresh your skills at spotting cyber threats, you can retake part or all of a course. 

IT Security Awareness course for faculty, staff, and researchers: 

Quick cybersecurity essentials: protect yourself while you work, study, and roam 

Course duration: 15 minutes 

Login with your McGill Username and Password to access the course

Topics addressed include data security, passwords, phishing, web conferencing, social networks, file sharing, and more! Each section of the course lasts approximately 1 minute. The course is offered in English and French, and each module can be interacted with visually and/or audibly. 

IT Security Awareness course for students: 

Cyber essentials: Be the boss of your digital space 

Course duration: 10 minutes 

Login with your McGill Username and Password to access the course

Topics addressed include phishing, Wi-Fi security, social networks, ransomware, and more! Each section of the course lasts approximately 1 minute. The course is offered in English and French, and each module can be interacted with visually and/or audibly. 


IT Security Awareness courses for researchers:

In addition to the Quick Cybersecurity Essentials course, researchers also have access to courses from the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security.

Introduction to research security

Course duration: 40 minutes

This course is offered by the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security in collaboration with Innovation, Science and Economic Development (ISED) Canada. To access the course, you will need to create an account on their site if you don't already have one. Make sure to create a unique password for your account, and do not reuse your McGill password.

Cyber security for researchers

Course duration: 50 minutes

This course is offered by the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security in collaboration with Innovation, Science and Economic Development (ISED) Canada. To access the course, you will need to create an account on their site if you don't already have one. Make sure to create a unique password for your account, and do not reuse your McGill password.

This course can be taken on its own, but it is recommended to first take "Introduction to research security", listed above.
