Target audience: This article is primarily aimed at instructors who wish to record lectures, but are not teaching in classrooms that support the Lecture Recording System. However, any student, faculty or staff member may use Camtasia for their video/audio recording needs.
In this article:
The current version of Camtasia available here for download requires Window's 64-bit operating system. If your computer is running an older operating system (eg. 32-bit), follow these steps to download an older version:
Note: Camtasia is not needed to capture videos of PowerPoint slides. See how to record a PowerPoint slideshow with narration for more information.
Instructors whose lecture rooms are not equipped for automatic Lecture Recordings can record their own lectures, demonstrations or student presentations using a screen recording software called Camtasia Studio. The software captures the video of screen animation; the laptop's internal microphone (or an external microphone plugged into the computer) can be used to capture the audio portion of the lecture. Once recorded and converted to web format, lectures can be uploaded to myCourses or Stream (video sharing platform) on Office 365.
Instructors recording their lectures with Camtasia Studio have full editing and publication control of their recordings.
You can download Camtasia Studio for Mac or PC free from McGill's Software Licensing site. Requires you to log in with your McGill credentials.
