Wipe data from your lost phone or device

OVERVIEW

Target audience: McGill community members who have phones/tablets or devices that support remote wiping

Note for McGill faculty and staff: Your mobile device may contain information about people and departments at McGill that could pose a security threat if it were to fall into the wrong hands. Following the procedure below minimizes the risk.

If your device accesses McGill email using the Outlook app, then only Outlook data (email, contacts, meetings) will be erased.

Remote wiping is only possible if your data plan is still active. DO NOT call your phone/data provider to cancel your data plan until the data wipe is complete. Only Outlook data (email, contacts, meetings) will be erased.

First: log in to Outlook on the web (OWA).

  1. Click the Gear (Top-right gear icon next to your avatar), then from the left pane, Account then select "Mobile devices".
  2. Select the device or application you want to deauthorize or wipe the data.
  3. Click the trash can icon next to it to remove the device from authorized devices list. Click Save to enact the removal or Dismiss to cancel the removal.
  4. Click the wipe all data button to simply wipe the data without deauthorizing the device. Click Save to enact the removal or Dismiss to cancel the wipe.
  5. Click OK to confirm.
  6. (optional) Click the Remove icon if you will no longer be using this device.

Wait for a message confirming the successful deauthorization or wipe. You may now contact your service provider to cancel your plan if you wish to do so.
