Configure Wireless for Linux (Ubuntu)


OVERVIEW

Target audience: McGill students, faculty, and staff

This article provides instructions for configuring wireless network access on Linux (Ubuntu).

Follow the instructions below to set up a connection to McGill’s wireless network using Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA).

NOTE:

Linux (Ubuntu) is supported at McGill on a best-effort basis.

Once you have installed your wireless card, follow the instructions below:

  1. In the menu bar at the top right of your screen, click the Network icon once and select one of the following wireless networks from the drop-down list:
    • wpa.mcgill.ca (wireless connectivity on campus and in residences)
    • eduroam (reserved for members of the eduroam service - non-McGill users visiting McGill and McGill users visiting another institution)
    • wpa.bus.mcgill.ca (wireless on inter-campus shuttle buses)
    • CUSM-MUHC.MCGILL.CA (wireless network of the MUHC [McGill University Health Centre] found in certain areas)
      Note: If you do not see the MUHC option and wish to request the installation of a new MUHC wireless access point, please contact MUHC Information Services at 514-934-8484.

  2. On the Wireless Network Authentication Required popup, fill in the fields as follows:
    • Wi-Fi security: WPA & WPA2 Enterprise
    • Authentication: Protected EAP (PEAP)
    • Anonymous identity: leave blank
    • CA certificate: Click on the down arrow, navigate to etc/ssl/certs, and select the DigiCert_Global_Root_CA.pem certificate; then click Open

      Choose a CA Certificate

    • PEAP version: Automatic
    • Inner authentication: MSCHAPv2
    • Username: Enter your McGill Username
    • Password: Enter your McGill Password
  3. Click Save to connect to McGill’s wireless network.

Once you are successfully connected, a message will appear under the Network icon in the menu bar stating that your connection has been established.
