Service overview

myLab is the web component of the McGill Hazardous Material Management System (HMMS), designed to facilitate safe handling and management of hazardous materials including radioactive materials (RAM), hazardous chemicals (CHEM) and biohazardous materials (BIO) from acquisition to disposal, in accordance with regulatory requirements. An integrated approach to managing hazardous materials has the following benefits:

• Streamlined management of inventories: allows all McGill laboratories to use McGill MarketPlace to order radioactive and hazardous chemical materials and use myLab for tracking their use and disposal.
• Waste reduction: By allowing laboratories to share their chemical inventories within their own departments, it helps reduce waste and costs.
• Safety: Easy online access to up-to-date inventories of hazardous chemicals and other controlled substances, their accompanying Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and their precise locations is critical to the safety of McGill researchers, staff, students and visitors and to fire department, police, ambulance services and other first responders, in the event of an accident or emergency. All safety inspections, training records, inventory and disposal records, and emergency response reports are available.
• Compliance with government health and safety regulations, including the Controlled Products Regulations: SDS safety information is readily accessible for consultation by anyone working with hazardous materials, as well as by University health and safety committees. SDS are updated at least every three years, as required by law. Labs comply with regulations regarding labelling of controlled products, chemical compatibility and storage.

Who can use it

McGill researchers and students working with hazardous materials in McGill laboratories as well as University Services staff.

Note: The Radiation Safety module can be made available to the Research Institute of the MUHC, for users who are disposing of waste material through McGill's Hazardous Waste Management.

How to request & access the service

Radiation Safety module - authorization and access

To be granted authorization to the Radiation Safety module, you must first:

• Request a permit to purchase radioisotopes: Visit the Radiation Permits page from where to find links to download the permit request. FAX or return the completed request form to the number/address stated on the form.

  For additional information about obtaining the permit, please visit https://www.mcgill.ca/ehs/mylab.

Once you have the permit, you can:

• Access the McGill MarketPlace to order these materials.
• Log in to https://mylab.mcgill.ca using your McGill Username and Password in order to track and manage them.

Chemical Safety module - authorization and access

Principal Investigators contact the myLab Administrators to request the necessary access for users in their lab. PIs can request:

• Full Access account - Each authorized user can view and modify the full inventory and SDS documents.
• Read Only account - These are generic user accounts, where multiple users use the same account to view the full inventory and SDS documents. 

All authorized users go to https://mylab.mcgill.ca.

• Full Access users log in with their own McGill Username and Password.
• Read-Only users (generic account) log in with a single Username and Password communicated to them by the Principal Investigator.

Availability

This service is available 24 X 7, except during scheduled and unscheduled maintenance. Check home page of the IT Support site for announcements regarding service interruptions.
