FAQs on Lecture Recording System for Instructors

OVERVIEW

Target audience: Instructors using the Lecture Recording Service

The FAQs in this article are grouped by topic:

Requests for recordings

How do I sign up to have my lectures recorded?

In myCourses, you must add the Lecture Recordings link to the navigation bar of your course. This link brings up a pop-up window with a form to sign up for lecture recordings. For step-by-step instructions, see Signing up for lecture recordings in myCourses

Can I have my lectures recorded but not available for download?

When you are signing up for lecture recordings you can choose to make your recorded lectures available by default for streaming playback (uses HTML5, which is supported on all current web browsers) and/or for download (as MP3 and MP4 files). Downloading and saving the recordings locally allows students to access recorded lectures anywhere and prevents unnecessary streaming of files from the server.

You can also decide to disable downloads or change the file formats at any time through the Course settings page under Lecture Recordings in myCourses. See the Lecture Recordings settings for instructors.

Can I request a partial lecture recording?

No. Partial lecture recordings are not currently supported. However you can trim the start and end of a recording. Click on the Tools and select the lecture you wish to edit; then click on Trim. Use the blue and red buttons to trim. You may also scrub using the blue and red dots. Remember to click Save.

Can I request the recording of tutorials that I offer outside of class times?

If the lecture or tutorial is located in a room that is equipped with lecture recording equipment, you can submit a request to the IT Service Desk. Make sure to include the Course Number with section, CRN, room, meeting time and date in your request.

I wish to record my lectures, but my teaching partner for the course does not. Can we do that?

Currently, the lecture recording system is enabled by course rather than by instructor, so all lectures for the course will be recorded. However, you could disable/hide recordings for the course by default and then manually make only your own lecture recordings available using the LRS Instructor Tools page in myCourses

What is the link for public lecture recordings? (outside myCourses)

http://lrs.mcgill.ca

How do I make my recorded lectures available to students within myCourses?

Once you add the Lecture Recordings link to your course’s navigation bar in myCourses your students will be able to access the recordings that you have enabled.

For Zoom recordings, if your recordings are not automatically associated with your course, you can find and add them through the Add Zoom Recordings link under Lecture Recordings.

How do I make specific lectures available or hidden?

You can choose which lectures will be available or hidden through the Lecture Recordings page in myCourses

Which rooms are currently equipped for Lecture Recording?

See the list of Lecture recording equipped classrooms (download Excel file). Please note that column E contains LRS (V - screen capture only) and (C - presenter view + screen capture).

One of the lecture periods will be used for an exam. Will that be recorded too?

Yes, all scheduled times are automatically recorded. However, you can hide/disable this recording. See Lecture Recording settings.

My lecture has moved from one classroom / time / day to another. Will recordings automatically continue?

No, you will have to contact the IT Service Desk to inform us of the change, making sure to provide the new details. If the new room is equipped with a lecture recording system, then the recordings can continue. Keep in mind that it make several business days to process the change, so it is best to notify us in advance.

Once I request lecture recording, how soon will the service be enabled?

Providing the request is valid and the correct information has been provided, within 24 hours.

Why wasn't my course recorded?

Why was the video I played in class not recorded by the LRS?

The content may be protected by High-bandwidth Digital Copy Protection (HDCP). HDCP is designed to prevent protected materials from playing on unauthorized devices and to block the duplication of protected content. HDCP-protected content may be played in the classroom if the AV equipment is HDCP-compliant; however, it will not be captured by the LRS. More details on HDCP are available in the Teaching and Learning Knowledge Base.

How soon will recorded lectures be available online?

A few hours after the recording.

How long are lecture recordings available online?

Lecture recordings* are available in myCourses and on the LRS website for 2 semesters after the one in which they were recorded. For example, recordings from Fall 2021 are available until the end of Summer 2022 term. After the archive period elapses, recordings will be discarded.

* IMPORTANT: Zoom recordings removed from server

Zoom recordings are removed from the Zoom cloud within a few days and should not be referenced directly from that site. Ensure that any Zoom recordings are added to your course in myCourses, through the Lecture Recordings > Add Zoom Recordings option. See Lecture Recording settings

Why isn't my name attached to my lecture recording?

The Lecture Recording System attaches only the name of the Primary Instructor in Minerva. You can change the default name displayed for new recordings or the name displayed beside individual recordings through the Lecture Recordings - Manage Recordings page in myCourses.

The lecture audio quality seems very poor. Why?

Read the Wireless microphones rental and usage for basic setup instructions on setting up both the receiver and the headset. For more detailed instructions, consult the room's specific equipment information in the Classroom Audiovisual Support Services knowledge base article.

Please ensure you are using the room microphone and have tested that the students can hear you clearly over the Public Address system of the room (when available). For best results, we recommend using a wireless microphone available on loan from IT Services Audiovisual Loans free of charge, for use in credit courses.

Why are the first / last few minutes of the lecture missing, for a certain lecture?

Recordings start and end according to the class's scheduled start and end times. If the instructor begins or ends at slightly different times, any portion of the lecture outside the scheduled time will not be captured.
