Setting up a Mac laptop to display content on a projector

Target audience: McGill faculty, staff and students setting up a Mac laptop in classrooms

Before you begin:

You can check the classroom's instructions for the Data Projector in the Classroom AV Instructions tool which contain the steps below.

Note: Some AV equipment in classrooms only have a VGA connection for the laptop. If your laptop does not have a VGA connection, you can borrow an HDMI to VGA Video Adapter Converter with Audio for laptops from the AV equipment loans counter at 688 Sherbrooke Room 285.

  1. Make sure your laptop is turned off.
  2. Ensure all AV cables (HDMI or VGA, Audio and Network) are connected to your laptop.
  3. Press the LAPTOP button on the AV control panel. The data project may take a minute to warm up.
  4. Turn on your laptop and decide whether to use Mirror Mode or Extended Mode.


Mirror mode:

If you want your laptop image to display on a data projector screen, follow the steps below:

  1. Go to System Preferences > Displays.
  2. From the list of available displays, select the monitor/projector you want to manage.
  3. Click on “Use as” pulldown and select “Mirror for…


Extended mode:

If you do not want you laptop image to display on the data projector screen, follow the steps below:

Note: With this set up the data projector will act as a second monitor.

  1. Go to System Preferences > Displays.
  2. Make sure projector or external display is selected.
  3. Use the Use as: drop down menu to select Extended display.

  4. You can leave the resolution of your laptop display at its default setting. However, you can adjust the resolution by selecting it in this screen (default resolution will be selected). 


Arranging displays

You can drag and rearrange displays based on their position in this window. To apply changes, click on Done.
