Web Publishing Training Courses


OVERVIEW

Target audience: McGill employees who need to edit or manage websites on the Web Management System (WMS).

Web Management System (WMS) Training

For a brief introduction to the McGill Web Management System, view the service description for Web Management. Also consult the *Index of Documentation for the Web Management System.

Access to any WMS site requires training as well as the authorization of the site administrator or the supervisor of the department responsible for the site. Request access for a staff member who has completed training by filling out the WMS Permissions web form.

Note: Registration for Web Management System (WMS) training for site management and editing is open to all McGill faculty and administrative staff through Minerva.

Instructor-led courses

Site Editing (WMS 300)

Target audience: Staff members who need access to their site as a Site Editor.
Prerequisites: Registration in Writing for the web at McGill (WS-100) and McGill's digital standards (WS-101) is required in order to obtain Site Editor privileges. Participants may complete these courses after completing WMS 300.
Duration: 2.5 hours

This hands-on workshop for Site Editors and Site Managers provides an overview of the main features of the McGill Web Management System and covers editing text, uploading and adding images and documents. Although very basic HTML tags are explained, this is not an HTML course.

Site Management (WMS 301)

Target audience: Staff members who need access to their site as a Site Manager.
Prerequisites:

Duration: 2.5 hours
Course format: Workshop

In this workshop, Site Managers will create and publish pages, edit menus, manage blocks, and create slideshows.

Editing, managing a WMS site [Formerly WMS 302]

Target audience: Site editors and site managers who need assistance with developing their site in the WMS.
Prerequisites: Site Editing (WMS 300)
Duration: 45 minutes to 1 hour (depending on demand for a specific section)
Course format: Lab

This lab is intended to provide hands-on assistance with the development of websites and the use of the Channels system. Each participant will be contacted by an instructor for a one-on-one web conference during which the instructor will provide assistance with questions related to WMS functionality. Participants are expected to work autonomously after receiving the required guidance from the instructors.

Prerequisites: Familiarity with the WMS interface is helpful, but is not required.
