Build and restructure menus in the WMS

OVERVIEW

Target audience: Site Administrators, Site Managers

Site Administrators and Site Managers can use the Menu administration to restructure or change the main menu of a site in the Web Management System (WMS).

In this article:

NOTES:

  • A page must be published before it will be visible in the Menu administration.
  • Menu items must only link to pages on your site. This ensures usability and consistency across the WMS. Links to other sites, even if also managed by you, should only appear in content (pages, blocks, etc.).
  • To add, remove, or edit links in the Footer, see Add, Edit and Manage Footer content in the WMS

Access the Menu administration

From the Administration toolbar, go to Structure > Menus. On the Main menu line, click list links.

Overview of the Menu

The drag-and-drop interface allows you to easily move pages around in the menu system by clicking on the drag-and-drop icon and dragging the pages up, down, left and right.

Note: The Home page does not appear under the drag-and-drop-interface since it should not have any subpages under the current WMS template design.

Menu levels, and how they appear to the public

Level 1 links

Level 1 links are the top-level links in your menu hierarchy. They generally appear as horizontal tabs across the top of the website (sites that do not use the horizontal tab menu will see these links in the left side vertical menu bar).

Note: Pages that have a checkmark in the Enabled column appear in the menu that your users see.

Level 2 links

Level 2 links appear in the left side vertical menu bar as subpages of Level 1 links.

Level 3 links

While you can have additional levels of subpages, it is highly recommended to avoid doing so if possible because it adds complexity for users navigating through the website.

Moving pages in the Menu administration

The drag-and-drop interface allows you to easily move pages around in the menu system by clicking on the drag-and-drop icon and dragging the pages up, down, left and right. See the Menu levels section of this article for an overview of the different levels, and how they appear in your menu structure.

Important: You must click the Save configuration button at the bottom of the Menu administration for your menu changes to take effect. If you navigate to another page before saving your changes, they will be lost.

Move a page to another menu or change its position in a menu:

Click the drag-and-drop icon and move your mouse pointer up or down until the page is placed where you want it to be. If a page has subpages, they will move with the page.

Move a page without its subpage(s):

  1. Uncouple the page that you don’t want to move from its parent by clicking the drag-and-drop icon and moving it to the left. For example, in Step 1,below, Experimental Page is moved to the left so that it is no longer a subpage of Research.

  2. Once this is done, you can click the drag-and-drop icon and move your mouse pointer up or down until the page is placed where you want it to be. In Step 2, Research is moved up and placed directly above Campus.

     Examples:

    Step 1:

    Step 2:

  3. Make a page the subpage of another page: Click the drag-and-drop icon and move your cursor to the right.

    Create subpage

  4. Change a subpage to a higher-level menu page: Uncouple the page that you want to move to a higher level from its parent by clicking the drag-and-drop icon and moving it to the left.

For example, in order to make Summer Happenings a Level 1 menu instead of a subpage of Montreal, we must drag it below Why Desautels? so that it is no longer a subpage.

Note: If you need to make a major menu reorganization of your website, consider requesting a staging site be created for you.
