Service overview
McGill University holds a campus license for Clarivate's EndNote citation management software. EndNote organizes references (visual, multilingual, PDF) for research and scholarly writing.
EndNote searches online bibliographic databases and creates bibliographies and figure lists. In addition, it includes features such as:
- Addition and transfer of file attachments to the web
- Annotation of PDF files
- Automatic reference updates
- Conditional formatting options
- Compare duplicate references
- New reference types for Dataset and Music
- New fields in the Journal Article reference type
- Maintenance of links to an original PDF file when importing PDFs to create new references

Who can use it
All active McGill University faculty, staff, and students can download and install EndNote on their personal computers or on McGill workstations for which they have administrative rights.

How to request & access the service
To install EndNote on your computer:
- Review the compatibility and system requirements for your operating system (Windows 10/11 or MacOS 10.14 or higher).
- Go to Software Licensing site and follow the process described in Ordering software from McGill’s Software Site.
- Once you start shopping on the Software Licensing site, scroll through the products or use the Search feature to find EndNote 21.
- When prompted, select your operating system (Windows or Mac).
- Follow the checkout process as outlined in the Ordering software KB to access your download.
- Once the download is finished:
- Click the Extract to or Extract all files to run the Extraction Wizard. Specific extraction steps may differ depending on your OS and what extraction software you are using (e.g., WinRar or WinZip).
- Copy the product key from the text file included in the extracted files - you will need to paste it when prompted during installation.
Note: You must extract all the files before you start the installation process.
- When the compressed folders have been extracted, go to the location where they were saved (which should open automatically).
- Run the installer to begin installation:
- Windows: Double-click on EN21Inst.msi, then follow the on-screen instructions.
- Mac: Double-click on the EndNote icon, then follow the on-screen instructions.
Important (Mac only): Safari browsers do not work well with EndNote. You are advised to download and install the Mozilla Firefox browser.

Cost
There is no cost for this software as long as you are an active student or staff at McGill. If you are a student, the costs are covered under your student fees.
