printer

Target audience: students, faculty and staff members

uPrint Anywhere is the email-based solution that allows you to print from your mobile devices (smartphone, tablet or laptop) and pick up your documents at any uPrint printer on campus. This solution does not require installation of any printer drivers. You need to be a current McGill student, faculty or staff member with an account eligible to use uPrint.

How to print via email from a mobile device

  1. Set up your email application to use your McGill email account, or else sign into Outlook on the web with your McGill email account credentials (first.last@mcgill.ca or first.last@mail.mcgill.ca).
  2. Attach the files you want to print to an email message.
Note: The body of the message will NOT be printed.
  3. Send the email to either:

Once your print job is ready you will receive a confirmation email with instructions on how to pick up your print job.

Note: Receiving a confirmation email does not guarantee that your print job is compatible with uPrint Anywhere. If you are printing a file in any other paper size than 8.5 by  11, in an unsupported format (see list of supported file formats), or which is larger than 10mb, it is not recommended that you use uPrint Anywhere. If you do send an incompatible file via uPrint Anywhere, log in at your selected uPrint device and access the Jobs menu. You will be able to select the incompatible file. You now have the option either to delete the file or to select an alternative paper stock which is compatible with the machine.

If you do not receive the confirmation email it may be because you are not eligible to use the service, e.g, if your student status is no longer valid or if you have holds on your student account.

Print charges: McGill will only charge you for the items you choose to release at the uPrint device; print charges are billed to your Student Account (students), or your department's/unit's FOAPAL (faculty & staff).

Data charges: There are no data charges when you are connected to the McGill network.  However, depending on your data plan, you may incur charges from your Internet/Phone Service Provider if you are emailing files from your mobile device when not connected to the McGill wireless network.

Print formatting options

As there are no printer drivers involved, you do not have control over the format of your print jobs, other than choosing to send to the colour or mono email address.

Documents will be printed with the default settings - double-sided on 8 1/2" by 11" paper.

For more sophisticated print jobs (special paper sizes, rotated, single-sided, etc.) you must print from a computer on the McGill campus network, or from your own computer with a McGill VPN connection and uPrint drivers intalled.

Tips and best practices

When you go to release your print job from a uPrint printer, be sure to only print the documents you want; click on your print job and validate pricing and the number pages to be printed, Don't simply click Print All.
