McGill Profiles in the Web Management System (WMS) can be configured to display a person’s display name and indexable name. The display name reflects a person’s preferred name while the indexable name determines the order in which a Profile appears in alphabetical lists and in search results through the McGill Profiles search box.
In this article:
The first field that appears on the Profile EDIT tab is the Display Name. This field allows you to enter a name that may be different from:
For instance, a person whose first and last name is "Guinevere Perrault" can have the display name "Gwen Perrault, MSc."
The Indexable name is used to determine the order in which a Profile appears in alphabetical lists, e.g., the Profiles List and the Profiles Index (if enabled), as well as in search results through the McGill Profiles search box (if enabled).
By default, the last word in the Display Name becomes the Indexable Name.
If a profile is created with the display name "Gwen Perrault, MSc," then "MSc" becomes the indexable name. The indexable name must be updated to "Perrault" if it is to be found under P.
Once updated, the profile will now be indexed under P (Perrault) instead of M (MSc).
Once set, the Indexable Name will not be affected by changes to the Display Name. For instance, should Gwen earn a PhD, the display name can be updated to "Gwen Perrault, MSc, PhD" and her indexable name will still be "Perrault."
A person named "Jonathan Rhys Jones" would automatically have the indexable name of "Jones" and be listed under "J." To ensure the person is found under "R," the indexable name could be changed to "Rhys-Jones" or to simply just "Rhys."
When specifying an indexable name, be sure to enter it without accents so that the name will be sorted in the usual alpha-order from A-Z otherwise it may seem as though it is not in the correct order. Accented letters are sorted after all regular letters from A-Z. For example, the name "Clément" comes after "Clement" as well as after "Clyne."
