How to check file storage usage in OneDrive


IMPORTANT: New OneDrive storage capacity 

 

On May 31st, 2024, OneDrive storage capacity for all students, was adjusted to 20GB, to comply with Microsoft’s new Storage quota for its educational sector clients.

If you are a McGill student, please verify your current storage using the instructions in this article.

To help reduce your usage:

  • Empty the recycle bin
  • Remove shared items and application installers
  • Move older, unused files and large files such as videos, PowerPoint presentations or picture libraries, off your OneDrive, to another location.

The OneDrive storage provided to staff or faculty members is not affected.

OVERVIEW

Target audience: Active students, faculty, and staff members, with the exception of casual staff.

Being an active student, faculty member or staff member, you are given access to McGill's secure cloud-based file storage and sharing service OneDrive for Business. Follow the steps below to check how much space you have used.

Checking your OneDrive usage on Windows

To check your usage in OneDrive:

  1. Click the Settings (gear) icon in the upper right corner and select OneDrive Settings.

  2. In the upper left corner, select More Settings then click Storage Metrics.

  3. This window lists all the files, folders, and other content in your OneDrive space, and how much space they use. At the top right, you can see how much how much free space is available.

Checking your OneDrive usage on Mac

To check your OneDrive usage:

  1. From the Mac menu, click on the OneDrive icon, click the gear icon in the upper right corner.

  2. Select Preferences.



  3. In the Preference window, select Account. From this window, you can see how much space you are using on OneDrive.



  4. By clicking on Choose folders you can see how much space each OneDrive folder is using.
