Configure Wireless on Windows 10


OVERVIEW

Target audience: Faculty, staff, students

This article will show you how to configure your Windows 10 device to access McGill's wireless network.

Follow the steps below to configure your Windows 10 device.


Method 1: Simple wireless configuration for Windows 10

  1. Click on the Network icon in the System tray.

  2. Select one of the following campus networks, depending on your location; then click on Connect:
    • wpa.mcgill.ca (secure WiFi on campus and in residences)  
    • eduroam (reserved for members of the eduroam service - non-McGill users visiting McGill and McGill users visiting another institution)
    • wpa.bus.mcgill.ca (on inter-campus shuttle buses)
    • CUSM-MUHC.MCGILL.CA (in some areas of MUHC (McGill University Health Centre
      Note: If you do not see this option, and wish to request the installation of a new MUHC wireless access point, please contact MUHC Information Services at 514-934-8484

  3. Enter your McGill Username and your McGill Password*; then click OK.
    *For non-McGill users, using eduroam at McGill, you would enter your own university credentials.

  4. Click Connect to continue with authentication.
    Note: You will see a Windows Security Alert message saying "Continue connecting? If you expect to find ... in this location go ahead and connect..." Just click Connect.

  5. You should now be successfully connected to McGill's wireless network.

    If you are not connected within a few seconds, you may try restarting your computer; or else try using the instructions below to set up the wireless connection manually.


Method 2: Manual wireless configuration for Windows 10

  1. Right-click on the Wireless icon in the System tray and select Open Network and Sharing Center, or Open Network & Internet settings.

    If you clicked Open Network & Internet settings you will see an intermediary Settings page; click Network and Sharing Center from there, to get to the following step.

  2. From the Network and Sharing Center,select Set up a new connection or network

  3. Select the option to Manually create a network profile.

  4. Enter the following information:

    Network name: wpa.mcgill.ca  (or one of the other McGill wifi networks)
    Security type: WPA2-Enterprise
    Encryption type: AES
    Select the checkbox to Start this connection automatically. Click Next.

  5. Click on Change connection settings.

  6. The wpa.mcgill.ca Wireless Network Properties box will open. Go to the Security tab and click on Advanced settings.

  7. From the Advanced settings window:
    • Put a check in the box labeled: Specify authentication mode.
    • From the drop menu, select User or computer authentication.
    • Click OK.

  8. You will return to the wpa.mcgill.ca Wireless Network Properties box.
    Under Choose a network authentication method, click on Settings.

  9. Select the following checkboxes:
    • Connect to these servers: and type wireless-login.mcgill.ca
    • Under Trusted Root Certification Authorities: Select DigiCert Global Root CA
    • Enable Fast Reconnect

  10. Next to the Secured password (EAP-MSCHAP vs) authentication method, click Configure...
  11. Uncheck Automatically use my Windows logon name and password. Click OK.

  12. Click OK to close the remaining open boxes and apply the changes.
    note

    NOTE:

    If this is your first time using this wireless connection, you will be prompted to enter your McGill Username and McGill Password.

If the wireless connection is not established after a few seconds, try restarting your computer again.

If you have mapped network drives (e.g. deptshare folders) on the McGill network, they should now be accessible from the Windows explorer.
