Focused Inbox feature in Outlook


OVERVIEW

Target audience: Anyone using the Outlook installed app or web-based Microsoft 365 mail app to access their McGill email.

The Focused Inbox feature in Outlook helps to separate messages that are less important to users. It creates two tabs in your inbox: Focused and Other.

Enable/Disable Focused Inbox in Outlook (installed app)

If this feature is turned ON you will see the Focused tab right above the list of emails.

To turn it ON:

  1. In Outlook Microsoft 365 or Outlook 2016, go to the View tab.
  2. Click on the Show Focused Inbox button

If this feature is turned ON you will see the Focused tab right above the list of emails.

To turn it ON:

Click the Settings icon (gear icon) at the top right corner and switch on the Focused Inbox option.

 Your new incoming messages will automatically be sorted, based on your previous behavior.

Manage Focused Inbox behaviour

You can manage how Focused Inbox organizes your messages. This will help Focused Inbox learn your reading habits.

  1. In your inbox, select the Focused or Other tab, then right-click on the message you want to move.
  2. If you want to move a message from Other to Focused, click Move to Focused. If you want all future messages from the sender to be placed in the Focused tab, click Always Move to Focused.




  3. If you want to move a message from Focused to Other, click Move to Other. If you want all future messages from the sender to be placed in the Other tab, click Always Move to Other.
