Reset my McGill password with Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR)


OVERVIEW

Target audience: Anyone whose McGill account is protected with Two-factor authentication (2FA)

Self-Service Password Reset (SSPR) is a Microsoft feature that provides 2FA users with the ability to reset their own password if they have forgotten it or are locked out of their account.

In this article:

Quick steps to reset your McGill password:

  1. In a web browser, go to https://passwordreset.microsoftonline.com/
  2. Enter your User ID (McGill username) and the displayed Captcha.
  3. Verify your identity using two of the authentication methods you set up for 2FA (e.g., text message and notification on your phone).
  4. Choose a new strong password.

Detailed steps:

  1. In a web browser, go to https://passwordreset.microsoftonline.com/. You will be prompted to enter your User ID (which is your McGill username) and enter the displayed Captcha. Click Next.

    NOTE:

    If you have two McGill usernames (e.g., @mcgill.ca and @mail.mcgill.ca) the password reset applies only to the username you enter in the User ID field.




  2. You will now have to verify your identity using two of the authentication methods you set up when you enrolled in 2FA. Only options you configured during your enrollment will be presented. To modify your authentication methods, see the article View and modify 2FA and SSPR account settings.

  3. Verification Step 1: Choose one of the authentication methods listed and enter the required information.



  4. Verification Step 2: Choose a second authentication method and enter the required information.



  5. Once the two-factor authentication process is complete, you will be prompted to enter your new password. Enter your new password and click Finish.



  6. You will be directed to a confirmation window.
