It Takes All of Us – Mandatory online sexual violence education program

OVERVIEW

Target audience: McGill faculty, staff, and students

It Takes All of Us is a learning program that strives to increase awareness of sexual violence, to ensure that our campus culture is based on respect and consent, and to help create a community free of sexual violence.

The program is mandatory for everyone at McGill as per the legal provisions mandated in Quebec Law P-22.1., and is accessed through myCourses.

Program overview

There are five modules in this training. With the help of character-driven scenarios, you will learn about sexual violence and who is impacted, how consent means more than "yes means yes," McGill's Policy Against Sexual Violence and associated resources, how to intervene if you see something inappropriate happening, and what to do if someone tells you they have been sexually assaulted.

Being informed about these issues is a baseline for healthy relationships because they arise in everyday life. Yet these issues can be difficult topics. If you are feeling overwhelmed at any point, remember you can click on the "Take a break" or "Need support" buttons in the navigation bar or simply close the program, and your progress will be saved.

Learning checks

A learning check will appear at the end of each module. You will notice it says "quiz," but don't worry! It's simply our way of ensuring you work through all five training modules, as required by Quebec Law P-22.1. To achieve a "complete" for the training, follow these steps (click on each checkmark symbol to reveal each step on the image below). Remember, the point of the learning checks is less about getting it right the first time and more about understanding why a response is the right one.

The learning check will appear after you review every section of a module. Then:

  1. Answer all the questions
  2. Click Submit Quiz
  3. Review the feedback under each question to understand why your response was incorrect.

After completing a learning check, continue to the next module.

Frequently asked questions

I completed the course 1 year ago, why does it show that I completed it on July 29th, 2025?

It is the behavior of the system. Everyone who has completed the course before July 29th will have this date because we launched the award system on this date. This has no effect on your actual completion date. However, if you completed it after the first launch date, it will be the correct completion date.

I am a student, and I was told to complete the course to remove the hold on my record. How long does it take to remove the hold?

If you have a hold on your record and you completed the course, it will take up to a day from the time you completed it for the hold to be removed.

What if I'm feeling distressed or overwhelmed by the thought of doing the program?

If you need confidential support or an accommodation for completing this training, don't hesitate to reach out to the Office for Sexual Violence Response, Support and Education (OSVRSE) at osvrse@mcgill.ca or 514-398-3954.

I completed the program between 2019-2022; do I have to complete it again?

Yes, this updated program is mandatory for everyone at McGill, including all students, staff and faculty, regardless of whether you completed the original version.

Does everyone complete the same program?

Yes, All McGill community members complete the same program. There are no longer separate versions for students and employees.

Do I have to take the program twice if I am both a student and an employee?

No, since there is only one version of the program, you only need to complete the program once.

I have previously completed sexual violence training at Concordia University or another educational institution. Do I also have to complete the program at McGill?

While another institution's training might be similar to that of McGill University, there are important differences in the explanation of McGill's policies, reporting mechanisms, and resources for supporting survivors of sexual violence. For that reason, you must complete McGill's version of the online training even if you have completed the one offered by Concordia or another educational institution.

I am a Quebec inter-university transfer student (CREPUQ); do I still need to complete the training?

No. Quebec inter-university transfer students are exempt from having to complete the program at McGill because they are required to complete training at their home university.

Where can I access a computer on campus so I can complete the modules?

McGill Libraries offer over 600 computer workstations throughout the Library system for use by McGill students, faculty and staff; visit this page for more details: https://www.mcgill.ca/libraries/using-libraries/computers. For specific computer access needs, please email osvrse@mcgill.ca

Can I complete the module in French?

Yes. The program is available in both English and French. You can select which language version you prefer on the ITAOU course main page in myCourses.

I am supposed to have access to the program, but I am unable to locate the program on myCourses. What do I do?

In myCourses, make sure you click "View All Courses" and search "It Takes All of Us." If you still don't see it or don't have access to myCourses, email osvrse@mcgill.ca with your McGill ID and a description of the issue.

I am a student, and the Minerva "View Holds and Warnings" page says I have a "UG-Acad Integrity Tutorial Hold." I already completed the It Takes All of Us program. What does this mean?

This message indicates that you have not yet completed the Academic Integrity Tutorial (AIT). The AIT has no affiliation with the It Takes All of Us program; it is a separate, mandatory online program for students. To release the hold on your record related to the AIT, please complete the AIT in Minerva (under "Student Menu").

What happens if I don't complete the program?

Students who have not completed the program by the applicable deadline will have a hold placed on their account in Minerva, preventing them from registering for their next term; the hold will be removed within 1 business day of completing the program.

Staff and faculty must complete the program by the applicable deadline. Those who do not will receive regular reminders and can be requested to report on completion in their annual activity reports.

Note that any student, staff, or faculty member who requires an accommodation will still receive a completion record to avoid having to disclose the accommodation.

I have completed the program, but it still appears in myCourses. Do I have to re-complete the program?

No, this program, like any other course on myCourses, will remain there even after you have completed the program. You can un-pin the program when you are done but are not required to re-do it if your program completion has been noted and verified.

How do I turn on closed captioning on videos?

To enable closed captions when viewing videos, click the gear button at the bottom right of the video, select "Captions," and click "en-CA (CC)." Once enabled, all videos in the program will automatically start with captions on.

How do I change the interface language in myCourses to French/English?

In addition to choosing an English or French version of the program, you can also set the myCourses interface (such as quiz buttons) in either official language via your account settings. Note that this preference will be applied throughout myCourses.

To change your language setting, click your name at the top right of myCourses and select "Account Settings." Under "Locale & Language," select your preferred language to display in myCourses.

I don't see checkmarks next to the "Welcome/Quick Guide" module even though I completed it; will this affect my completion of the program?

While it does contain important information about the training and how to navigate it, viewing the "Welcome / Quick Guide" is not required for the completion of the program (i.e., checkmarks in "Content" are not required). Only the completion of Modules 1-5, the five learning checks, and the Conclusion are required.
