Joining a Team in Microsoft Teams using a Teams Code

Students, faculty and staff members who are given a code to join a Microsoft Teams team

If you are given a Teams code, you can join the team on your own, without any further membership management on the part of the Team owner.

Downloading the Microsoft Teams app

To get access to all the Teams features, we recommend that you download and install the Microsoft Teams app for your Windows or Mac OS computer from https://teams.microsoft.com/downloads

The Microsoft Teams app is also available for Android on the Google Play Store and iOS App Store.


Joining a team using a code

The procedure for joining a team depends on which view you are using. There are two views for chats, teams, and channels: separate and combined.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The location of the Joined Team option may vary depending on whether Teams is configured for Separate or Combined view.

To change your view, go to Settings > Chats and channels > Viewing chats, teams, and channels:


Option 1: Join a team in separate View
  1. Open the Microsoft Teams desktop application.
  2. Select Teams from the left navigation pane.
  3. Click the drop-down arrow next to the New Item icon and select Join Team.



  4. In the Join a team window, enter the Team Code provided to you.

  5. Click Add team to complete the process.

Option 2: Join a team in combined view

To join a team using the combined view:

  1. Open Microsoft Teams.
  2. Select Chat from the left navigation pane.
  3. Click the drop-down arrow next to the New Item icon and select Join Team.
  4. In the Join a team window, enter the Team Code provided to you.
  5. Click Add team to join the team.

You are now a member of the Team!
