Joining a Team in Microsoft Teams using a Teams Code

Target audience: 

Students, faculty and staff members who are given a code to join a Microsoft Teams team

If you are given a Teams code, you can join the team on your own, without any further membership management on the part of the Team owner.

Downloading the Microsoft Teams app

To get access to all the Teams features, we recommend that you download and install the Microsoft Teams app for your Windows or Mac OS computer from https://teams.microsoft.com/downloads

The Microsoft Teams app is also available for Android on the Google Play Store and iOS App Store.

Joining a team using a code

The procedure for joining a team depends on which view you are using. There are two views for chats, teams, and channels: separate and combined.

To change your view, go to Settings > Chats and channels > Viewing chats, teams, and channels:

Joining a team (separate view)

To join a team using the separate view:

  1. Open Microsoft Teams, and if prompted, log in with your McGill credentials.
  2. Click the Teams button on the left side of the screen.
  3. Click Join or create a team at the top-right of the Teams panel.
  4. Select Join Team.
  5. In the next window, enter the code you were given, in the Join a team with a code field then click Add team.

You are now a member of the Team!

Joining a team (combined view)

To join a team using the combined view:

  1. Open Microsoft Teams, and if prompted, log in with your McGill credentials.
  2. Click on Channels at the top of the Teams panel.
  3. Click on See all your teams at the bottom
  4. Click Join or create a team at the top-right of the Teams panel.
  5. Select Join Teams
  6. In the next window, enter the code you were given, in the Join a team with a code field then click Add team.

You are now a member of the Team!
