Set up Mail on macOS to access your McGill email

McGill provides you with an email account and mailbox on Microsoft's Office 365 Exchange Online cloud service (see Email for Students, Faculty & Staff and Affiliates | Email for Alumni).

IMPORTANT: Using Apple mail to access your McGill email

The Officially supported application to access the McGill email is Outlook for Mac. We provide the instructions to access it in the Apple Mail application as a courtesy and support for the Mail app is offered on a best‑effort basis only.

In order to support Two-factor Authentication (2FA), you need to be using Mail on macOS 10.14.6 (Mojave) or higher. In general, McGill IT Services supports the most recent version of macOS and one version prior. Get the latest macOS updates.

Configuring Mail on macOS X

This setup procedure automatically detects where your McGill mailbox resides. You must have Internet connectivity to complete this setup.

To configure Mail to access your McGill email on macOS:

  1. Launch Mail (.app) from the dock or from Applications folder.
  2. From the Mail menu, select Accounts (You will be redirected to the Internet Accounts in the System settings.)
  3. Click on Add Accounts.
  4. Enter your McGill email in the field then click Continue to display the following options:



  5. Select Microsoft Exchange.
  6. Enter the following information:
    • Name: your full name, as you want mail recipients to see it.
    • Email Address: your McGill email address (first.last@mail.mcgill.ca or first.last@mcgill.ca or first.last@affiliate.mcgill.ca - same as your McGill Username)

  7. Click Sign in / Connection.



  8. Click Sign In again.
  9. Enter your password in the McGill Single-sign-on screen.
  10. Select the services you wish to consult from your Mail app.


 

Removing an email account from Mail on macOS X

You may need to remove your old McGill email account from Mail before adding a new one.

To remove an email account from Mail:

  1. Open the Mail app.
  2. Click on Mail from the top menu, then click on Accounts.
  3. Click on Exchange.
  4. Click Delete Account...
  5. Click OK to confirm.
