Service overview

The Animal Management System (AMS) for research and teaching activities involving animals, is an online Animal Use Protocol and animal facility management software that centralizes electronic submissions and approvals for researchers, committee members, animal facility staff, veterinarians and administrators at McGill University and Research Institutes of Affiliated Hospitals. It also includes management of financial activities, animal breeding, clinical health and inspections for the animal care program.

How to request & access the service

Existing users:

infoIMPORTANT: to login to AMS, use your full McGill email address and your own password. 

For Non-McGill, existing Darwin users: All users who are not employees or students at McGill University will receive an invitation to create a Microsoft Account with which they will be able to access AMS. Once the new account is created, they will be able to login to AMS and view the access-controlled how-to videos by using the full McGill email address and the password they will have created.

New users:

McGill employee or student: If you are not currently an AMS user, please ask your supervisor or AMS Local Administrator to complete this AMS Access Request WebformYou cannot ask for access for yourself. The person completing the Webform must already have access to the AMS software. The ACO will start the process and your Local Administrator will finalize it by assigning software permissions (investigator, committee member, veterinarian...).

Non-McGill user: If you are not a McGill employee or student and are not currently an AMS user, please have your supervisor or employer fill the AMS Access Request Webform.


Access the service

First time access:

To access the Animal Management System (AMS) for the first time, you must use the email invite you received

  1. You must follow the steps outlined in the email to create an account and password.
  2. You must also review the permissions granted and accept them. Note that McGill will not have access to any of your personal information.

Subsequent accesses:

To access your instance, follow these steps:

  1. Click on the link associated to your site below:
  2. To access your site’s AMS instance, use your email address ending with @mcgill.ca for your institutional/work email or @mail.mcgill.ca for your student email. Do not use your short username like you did in Darwin, it will not work
    1. If you previously used an @affiliate.mcgill.ca email account to access Darwin and are unable to log in, please contact your affiliate email sponsor. 
    2. If you are unable to login, check your emails for the invite (see First time access section above.) that was sent to you a few days ago. (It may be in your junk mail folder.)

If you still have issues logging into AMS, send an email to ams@mcgill.ca. In the email, please provide the email/username you used to sign-up.

There is no cost associated with this service.


Availability

The service is available 24 X 7, except during planned maintenance or outages. Check the home page of the IT Support site for announcements.
