Site managers can replace the vertical menu displaying level 2 child items with a drop-down menu in the horizontal navigation.

Drop-down menus vs vertical menus
A drop-down menu works well for short, simple lists. By removing the vertical menu, a drop-down menu saves space on the page.
A vertical menu makes it easier for users to scan a longer list of pages. Being able to see the menu persistently helps users know where they are within the site.
Level 2 child items appear in the vertical menu (see image below):

Navigate to the menu administration screen
- Click Structure.
- Click Menus.
- Click List links in the Main navigation row.
- Click Save.
Create a drop-down menu
- On the menu administration screen, locate the menu link to be turned into a drop-down menu.
- Click Edit.
- Click Display settings.
- Select the Show as expanded checkbox.
- Click Save.
Expanding a child menu item
Level 2 and level 3 child items appear in a drop-down menu (see image below):
If the Show as expanded checkbox is selected for a level 2 child menu item, the vertical menu will not appear on that child page. If there are level 3 child pages under that page, they will appear in the drop-down menu.
Remove a drop-down menu
- On the menu administration screen, locate the menu link that is currently a drop-down menu.
- Click Edit.
- Click Display settings.
- Clear the Show as expanded checkbox.
- Click Save.
