Tip: Start with the basics

If you're new to Banner Admin Pages, begin with the Quick start and Landing Page sections. Once you're familiar with the basics, use this article as a reference and expand only the sections relevant to the task you're performing.

Before you start

Landing Page (left menu panel)

Show/Hide: What each left-menu item does

The Landing Page (also called the Application Navigator) includes a “sticky” left menu panel that stays available while you work.

Menu panel itemWhat it does

DashboardReturns you to the Landing Page from anywhere in Banner.

  2. Browse the available menus and select the page you need.

Show/Hide: Open a page using Search

  3. Select the correct result to open the page.

tip

Tip: one “live” copy per page

Banner 9 often re-uses the same page if it’s already open. If a page seems to “vanish”, open it again using Search or Recently Opened.

Inside a page (Key Section, Tools, Related)

Show/Hide: Key Section (how to begin)

Many pages start with a Key Section at the top.

  1. Enter the required information in the Key Section.
  2. Select Go to load the rest of the page.
  • After you select Go, the Key Section often collapses and you will see Start Over instead.
  • Start Over clears the current context and lets you begin a new search/task on that page.
Show/Hide: Page header (Tools vs Related)

The page header usually includes:

  • Close (X): exits the page.
  • Related: opens a list of pages related to the one you’re using (opens another page).
  • Tools: actions for the current page (stays within the page, such as refresh/export/print depending on the page).
  • Add / Retrieve: options used with Banner Document Management (if enabled for your area).
Show/Hide: Tabs, sections, and footer navigation
  • Tabs group information by topic. Some tabs may be unavailable (greyed out) until you complete the Key Section.
  • Sections are the work areas inside a tab. When a section is active, you may see actions like Insert, Delete, Copy, and Filter.
  • The page footer often includes Next Section / Previous Section, Save, a record count, and sometimes a table/field name.

Lookups and filtering (Basic vs Advanced)

Show/Hide: Look up a value (List of Values)

Some fields include a lookup icon to help you find valid values (not all fields have it).

  1. Select the lookup icon in the field.
  2. In the list window, type in the Criteria field to narrow results, then press Enter.
  3. Select the correct value and choose OK (or double-click the value).
Show/Hide: Filter data in a section

Filtering is how you “query” data in Banner 9. The Filter (funnel) icon is context-sensitive: it is available only when the section is active.

Basic filter

  1. Enter values in one or more filter fields.
  2. Select Go to display results.
  3. If needed, use Filter Again to refine.

Advanced filter

  1. For each field, choose an operator (operators depend on the field type).
  2. Enter your filter value.
  3. Select Go.
  4. Use Filter Again to refine.

Quick cleanup: remove a field using the minus icon (if shown) or use Clear All where available.

Wildcard searching (Advanced filter)

Show/Hide: When to use wildcards

Use wildcards when you don’t know the exact spelling (for example, names with accents or multiple spellings). Wildcards are most reliable with the Advanced Filter and an operator like Like / Starts With / Ends With.

Show/Hide: Wildcard cheat sheet
WildcardMeaningExample
_ (underscore)Any single characterFl_r matches a 4-letter value where the 3rd character can vary
% (percent)Any number of charactersVill% matches values that start with Vill
Show/Hide: How to run a wildcard search (step-by-step)
  1. Open the section you want to search, then select the Filter (funnel) icon.
  2. Select the Advanced Filter tab.
  3. For the field you are searching, set the operator to Like, Starts With, or Ends With (not Equals).
  4. Type your value using a wildcard (example: Villau_ or Fl_r).
  5. Select Go.
announcement

Important: re-check the operator

If you switch between Basic Filter and Advanced Filter, Banner may change the operator back to Equals. When that happens, your wildcard will stop working.

Before you select Go: confirm the operator still says Like / Starts With / Ends With.

Tip: If you do a lot of wildcard searching, set your default filter to Advanced in your user preferences (if available in your Banner environment).

Keyboard shortcuts (most useful)

Optional: QuickFlows

Show/Hide: What QuickFlows are (and when to use them)

QuickFlows are saved “guided sequences” of pages that open in a specific order (useful for repeating multi-step tasks).

  • You can search for QuickFlows from the Landing Page Search field.
  • QuickFlows should contain pages of a single technology type (do not mix Banner 8 and Banner 9 pages in one QuickFlow).
Show/Hide: Create and populate a QuickFlow

Create a QuickFlow

  1. Open the QuickFlow Code Validation page.
  2. Select Insert to create a new record.
  3. Enter a code (name) and a description.
  4. Select Save.

Add pages to a QuickFlow

  2. Enter your QuickFlow code and select Go.
  3. Enter each page’s 7-character page ID in the order you want them to open.
  4. Select Save.

Troubleshooting

Show/Hide: Common issues and fixes
  • I can’t find the page I need: try searching by the 7-character page ID (if known) or use broader keywords.
  • The Filter (funnel) icon is greyed out: select inside the section first to activate it, then try again.
  • My wildcard search returns no results: confirm you are using Advanced Filter and the operator is Like / Starts With / Ends With (not Equals).
  • I changed something by mistake: if you have not saved, try Refresh/Rollback. If you need to restart the page context, use Start Over.
  • My keyboard shortcuts don’t work: some browser/system shortcuts can override Banner shortcuts. Use Help > Keyboard Shortcuts to confirm what your environment supports.
